Winter Blunderland

On Thursday of last week (November 30th), there was a huge winter storm in the Midwestern US.  That evening, it took me an hour and a half to get home (I work 15 miles from work).  That evening, the power went out at my place around 8:30pm.  It is now Tuesday December 5th, around midnight, and the power at my place is still out.  I have been checking every few hours (my answering machine will pick up with the power is back on).  So its been 4 days without power at my place.  Luckily I have internet at work, and in the hotel I’m staying at.

On Saturday evening, according to the Ameren UE website, there were 4000 people without power in my zip code.   On Sunday morning, there were 4500 people in my zip code without power.  Thats right.  When I checked this afternoon, 4900 people are without power in my zip code.  Now I keep hearing reports on the news that more and more people are having their power restored, but in the past 4 days, they’ve managed to increase the number of people without power in my town.  WTF!!?!

On Friday, when I woke up, there was a tree down on my driveway, and there was really no way that I could get to work.  Today when I got back in, I found out that almost no one in my group showed up for work on Friday.  We all have similar stories, but the powers that be decided that that day should be recorded as a personal day, a vacation day.  I really shouldn’t complain, because I haven’t really taken much of my allotted vacation, but sitting at home in a house with no power, where you can’t leave is not vacation.  I would honestly have rather been at work.
