What the hell have I been doing since my last real entry way back in like July/August? Well I’ve been busy. On August first I started working as an Analyst at St. Louis University. To sum up the job, I am responsible for all of the computer problems on campus. That doesn’t sound right. Any problems, either PC or Mac, either hardware or software, get assigned to me. I am also responsible for standardizing the PC image. My coworker, Eric, is handling the Mac image. As you might imagine, that keeps me fairly busy during the week. Because of the abundance of remedy tickets, I had to schedule my weeks so that I have two analyst days a week, 2 remedy days, and one day for meetings. I hate meetings. Oh well.
I have also been learning C# using the .NET Framework, to which I am slowly converting all of the pc scripting. Combined with WMI, I wrote an application to handle every thing from the reboot after ghosting, to the point where a machine is ready to be used. One of the big requirements here, was to do that, without using AD to install programs. So I had to ghetto rig a system for that. What makes it difficult, is that everything has to install without the user seeing it; it has to be 100% ready when the user sits down to login. Most recently, I wrote a program to handle all the whole Windows Update bullshit. Because we use a program called Deep Freeze to “freeze” all our systems, I can’t just let the machines update whenever. Its a pain in the ass, but it works, so I’m happy.
I am also still “developing” http://www.peoplesvanguard.org, a website based around a couple of computer games. However, the site is running phpnuke, so there isin’t a whole lot of “babysitting” necessary. Unfortunatly, between work and driving to/from work (about an hour each way) I haven’t really had the oppurtunity to play a whole lot. Oh well.
Now that I’ve been working here for about six months, I have started looking for a new place. I would prefer to live in Missouri, because it would cut down on my commute, gas is less expensive, and I would only have to pay taxes to one state. But it is too early to tell for sure which direction I’ll try. The cost of living around St. Louis is a bit higher than what it was in Columbia. There were a couple of places I rented, for less than $700 that had 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms. Around here, thats the starting price for a single bedroom. Chances are, I’ll end up moving farther away from the city, to cut down on the price. We’ll see.
